About Sheils – Your "office genius"
The old adage states “necessity is the mother of invention”. Whilst it is not always true that we invent something when necessity beckons, it is certainly apt that “necessity is the parent of decisive action”.
This is very evident in the situation that confronted Sheila De Burgh in Brisbane in 2007. A single mum, Sheila (affectionately referred to as Sheils), had moved north to Brisbane in 2002, constructed a house as an owner builder, and was in the process of raising her young family whilst working in office administration.
In 2007, her son was experiencing severe headaches that required additional attention from a concerned mother. Unlike now, where an environment of greater work life flexibility is more prevalent, Sheils was unable to work from home on a more frequent basis. As such, she had no option but to resign from her position to take on additional caring duties. This resulted in the somewhat grim prospect of; family to care for, house to finance, no income!
In discussing the situation with a neighbour, they made the suggestion, “why not start your own business”? Easy to say, maybe not so easy to do! However, never one to shirk an issue, Sheils commenced a certificate of Small Business and certificate of Accounting, completed this in record time, and Sheils Bookkeeping Service was born.
Sheils Bookkeeping Service was built on a business model of providing a complete suite of administrative services to mid-sized operations, and becoming in effect their full time bookkeeper and administrator.
Sheils worked with some larger players in the bakery industry, an engineering company in the mining sector and a medical practice that expanded into the dental industry. In 2013, Sheils moved back to Melbourne and now operates her business in East Doncaster. The company still works with a major player in the baking business, Wonder Pies, whom act as a manufacturer/wholesaler and retails with four company owned stores, under the Baketico brand.
Sheils Bookkeeping Service also manages the bookkeeping and administration functions for several smaller clients and the company has expanded to include two additional employees, Lisa and Emily. On a personal note, Sheils’ family has also grown to welcome her first grandchild.
When questioned about the success of the company and why the company has been entrusted with managing the books for clients for such lengthy periods, Sheils believes it is the friendly and warm approach the business creates and operates in, and they simply remove headaches for SME businesses and resolve problems. They not only maintain the administrative functions, but because they become well embedded in their client’s operations, they often provide strategic, and HR advice as required. The company has definitely become a trusted partner for the businesses they work with.

I’m Sheils, I have been a fully qualified Bookkeeper and BAS Agent since the regulations were first introduced. Throughout my career, I have always been involved with accounts and I am glad those years of background knowledge now allow me to help people run their business more efficiently.
Since being joined firstly by Lisa, who I had worked with previously and now Amanda who became part of the team more recently, our workplace is more enjoyable and we like to celebrate all the little wins.
I enjoy walking, spending time with family and friends and dabbling in property development. I have renovated one house, was an owner builder of my house in Qld before moving back to Melbourne in 2013 and undertaking to build a couple of townhouses here in Doncaster East.
